ELLEN DEGENERES QUITS “AMERICAN IDOL”

The latest blow to the franchise that was “American Idol” is the news that Ellen DeGeneres will not be reprising her role as judge for a second season.

This comes on the heels of the departure of Simon Cowell, largely thought to signal a death knell for the once-invulnerable show.

There was also a news piece recently that the show did not plan to have tryouts in Chicago next season. Considering that both of this past year’s finalists came out of the Chicago auditions, this seems odd.

And, on an unrelated observation, does anyone else think that the Brit (Simon Fuller) tapped to replace Larry King looks like the departing head of BP, Tony Hayward? Just wondering.

“A couple months ago, I let FOX and the American Idol producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me,” she says in a statement. “I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.”

DeGeneres adds, “I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.”

In the same statement, Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller says, “I loved Ellen’s passion for the artists and her nurturing skills. She brought honesty and optimism to our judging panel and I will miss her greatly.”

Peter Rice, the FOX entertainment chairman, says, “We love Ellen and understand and support her decision to bow out of Idol. We were fortunate to receive the humor, energy and love for talent that she brought to the show.”

Happy Birthday, Elliott Yamin!

Season 5’s Elliott Yamin turns 32 today. It’s hard to believe it was five years ago that Elliott made a name for himself on American Idol. His warm personality, smooth vocals, and his doting mother Claudette made him one of the most beloved contestants ever on the show. Since his time on Idol, Elliott has had a lot of success in the music industry, but he always makes time to help those in need.

Elliott has released the albums Elliott Yamin, Fight for Love, and the holiday records Sounds of the Season: The Elliott Yamin Holiday Collection and My Kind of Holiday. His first album, Elliott Yamin, debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was the highest new artist debut on an independent label in SoundScan history. On October 12, 2007, the album was certified gold. His hit single "Wait for You" was certified Platinum in digital sales on October 16, 2008. In total, Elliott has had four #1 hits on the Billboard charts.

Elliott is currently working on his next album and told the Examiner.com, “I’m co-writing a lot of the songs just like on my last album; my influences come from my experiences in life and travels.” Although he is only 32, Elliott has had a lot of life experiences. A string of ear infections left him with 90% hearing loss in his right ear at age 13. Three years later, Elliott was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. In February, Elliott was in Chile and experienced the devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake. He updated his concerned fans about the conditions abroad and his search to find insulin.

The charitable Idol has worked with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Promise to Remember Me Campaign, the Inspired by Diabetes Creative Expression Competition, the Life for a Child Program, and the World Diabetes Day. Over the weekend Elliott performed at Leesburg, Virginia’s Summer Block Party benefitting Habitat for Humanity. He’s traveled to Africa twice for Idol Gives Back to raise awareness about malaria prevention with Malaria No More. Read more about his latest trip to Africa. Elliott has also spoken to Season 9 runner-up Crystal Bowersox, a juvenile Type I diabetic, about starting an organization that provides education and supplies to the needy.

American Idol 2010 Top 2 – Season Finale Elimination Results

Update: Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia will sing “Together We Are One” as a farewell to Simon Cowell. Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks will both be on the finale tonight. It is rumored the guys will sing “You Make My Dreams Come True” and “Maneater” and Lee Dewyze will perform with Hall and Oates and Crystal Bowersox will sing with Joe Cocker, these are just rumors as well.

Other possible entertainers include P.Diddy, Usher and Rueben Studdard. Paula Abdul may make an appearance and not just on the video.

Check out these Idol performances from “Country’s Night to Rock”, broadcast on ABC Monday night. The special featured performances from this summer’s CMA Music Festival.
Bucky Covington’s performance of “It’s Good to Be Us” is a backdrop for a tour of the festival grounds by Bucky. I have to say, he does a real nice job with the voice overs! And then Kellie Pickler performs “Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful”, the single from her upcoming album due to drop September 30. Carrie Underwood, looking summery in an orange halter and a cute pair of shorts, performs “Last Name”. She’s introduced by co-hosts Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift.

Television's No. 1 show, American Idol, returns for its seventh season when it premieres in January. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the hit series empowers viewers to discover America's next solo singing superstar by voting for their favorites to win the coveted American Idol title.

Every year, tens of thousands of hopefuls from across the nation audition for a shot at stardom and a chance to be the next American Idol. The show's judges - Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson - winnow down the competitors to a select group of semifinalists who sing their hearts out each week for the studio audience and the television viewers. The judges have their say after every performance, but it's the viewing public that determines who will advance to the next round of the competition and who will go home. Congratulations to David Cook on a great win with a more than 12million vote majority - dare I say the biggest victory in Idol history?

American Idol Grand Finale 2008

What a season it's been. While the entertainment on Television has been fun and questions have been raised about the ratings, everyone running online sites has experienced great results. Yesterday, Idolblog.com had over 55,000 visitors with 20,745 of them coming to the site in the hour after the show aired in the East. This is dramatically up on last year so whatever the commentators may say about the future of American Idol, from an online perspective there is plenty of interest.

Enough of that though, join me for the live recap.

Tonight's Live Finale is coming from the Nokia Theatre. More than 97.5 million votes were cast last night, smashing the previous record by 23 million. Apparently the split was 56%-44%. Based on that figure and all the polls online which are all pointing towards David Cook, it will be a huge surprise if it's the other way around. Despite the fact that Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell were all swinging towards an Archuleta win last night.

Kris Allen to Kick Off Idol Gives Back

American Idol’s Kris Allen will travel to Haiti with the United Nations Foundation to raise further awareness of the country’s continuing needs after last month’s earthquake. During the Idol results show on Thursday, Feb. 25 8/7c, Kris will perform and will share footage of his trip to raise awareness and funds that will benefit those in need via one of this year’s Idol Gives Back beneficiaries, the UN Foundation.

During the show, viewers will be asked to support the efforts in Haiti by donating much-needed funds. Donations will be accepted online and via text-messaging, and proceeds will go to the Idol Gives Back Foundation to help the UN Foundation and their work in Haiti.

“It is heartbreaking to see the devastation that Haiti is currently facing,” said Kris. “I am truly honored to be traveling to Haiti to see the UN’s relief efforts firsthand and to help out in any way that I can.”

“We are proud to partner with the Idol Gives Back Foundation, FOX and American Idol on this special episode,” said Kathy Calvin, CEO for the United Nations Foundation. “We are working directly with the UN to help Haiti address the medium and long-term challenges of reconstruction. The UN needs our support so it can continue to provide food, water, shelter, medicine, security and economic opportunities to the earthquake victims. The UN and Haiti are rising to the challenge and we all have a chance to help them re-build their future.”

Since the earthquake, the United Nations has been working hand-in-hand with Haitians to help them recover. In the months ahead, the UN’s life-saving work will continue, including delivering food and water to millions of Haitians, providing opportunities for employment to more than 200,000 people and ensuring women and children are safe from mitigating diseases such as measles and malaria.

In addition, it was announced that News Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Coca-Cola, AT&T and ExxonMobil will return as corporate sponsors of Idol Gives Back and will generously donate to the historic Emmy Award-winning television event airing during the Top 7 Results Show Wednesday, April 21 8/7c on FOX. The brainchild of Simon Fuller, this special music event will raise awareness and funds to benefit five charities, including Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children’s U.S. Programs and the United Nations Foundation.

Tonight Show Ratings Bump? How About a Thank You for Jay!

Two can play at this game. (Well, really, including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, George Lopez, et al, it's been more like eight, but...)

Jay Leno had a few choice words for Conan O'Brien tonight, approximately 24 hours after his redheaded successor spread some of the NBC-late-night-debacle blame in Jay's direction.

"In other TV news, Sarah Palin has signed with Fox News to be a correspondent," Leno opened Thursday's monologue. "Fox says if she does a good job, they'll sign her to a long-term contract. And if it doesn't work out, they'll just blame Leno.

"With all the controversy going on here at NBC, actually," he continued, "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien's ratings have gone up. So, you're welcome!"

Touché, Jay. Touché.

NBC has yet to weigh in on what the heck is going on over at the Peacock zoo, other than to reveal its winter/spring prime-time schedule—which, in case you hadn't heard, will be without The Jay Leno Show, starting Feb. 12.

Lucky for us, Conan's willing to address some of the latest rumors...

"There's a rumor that NBC is so upset with me, they want to keep me off the air for three years. My response to that is, if NBC doesn't want people to see me, just leave me on NBC," O'Brien said during his monologue after introducing himself as "NBC's employee of the month."

But that's just a rumor. (EW.com is reporting that a new deal to bring Leno back to 11:35 p.m. would include some sort of stipulation that would prevent O'Brien from leaping right to a competing network.)

"This is absolutely true," O'Brien offered. "I received a letter from the adult film company Pink Visual offering me a role in one of their porno movies. In the movie I'd be having sex with a beautiful woman and just as we're about to climax I get replaced by Jay Leno."

But "no matter what happens," he continued, "it's been a real honor to sit in the same chair as Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, and Jay Leno."

With all the late-night kerfuffle, it's been easy to forget about the silent victims of this crisis. And we don't just mean Jimmy Fallon.

Even Conan's wingman Andy Richter, who's apparently in the hole after dropping $400K on a bar mitzvah for his 9-year-old Lutheran son, couldn't keep quiet any longer.

"So, TV, whatever you've got, I will take it," said the desperate sidekick. "You want me on one of those celebrity rehab shows? You name the drug and I will get hooked on it tomorrow!"

Ellen Tortures With Ease on American Idol

Ellen DeGeneres' first episode of American Idol could have been her 100th. She fit right in.

Not only did the show wisely not dwell on her too much, leaving the emphasis on the terrifying "sudden death" round of Hollywood week, but she wasn't too funny, either.

Meaning, we hope, there's plenty left in the tank for future rounds.

But while DeGeneres looked very serious in her reading glasses and crushed dreams like a grizzled veteran, she still brought some much-needed funny to the proceedings—an element Idol has always possessed, only this time it was coherent and intentional!

Not that Paula Abdul wasn't missed...

Andrew Garcia's acoustic version of "Straight Up" was an excellent homage to the former Idol judge—and for him a straight shot into the dreaded group round.

"That was genius," raved Kara DioGuardi. "Paula would be screaming and yelling and clapping and dancing..."

Yes, we get it.

Among the familiar round-one auditioners chosen to continue the journey with Andrew were Casey James (who actually doesn't need to take his shirt off to entertain), 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn, rocker mom Mary Powers, freshly tattooed Crystal Bowersox, L.A. waitress Didi Benami and Michael Lynche, whose wife had just gone into labor with their first child when he took the stage.

But while they are certainly deserving, all will be humbled by the group round, which tends to be the bane of the contestants' collective existence, be it because of the late nights, the personality clashes or the sheer fact that some people are just meant to sing alone.

American Idol Group Round a Cause for Complaint

Ah, group round. Even when it's pretty good, it's still kinda bad.

Ninety-six hearty souls prostrated themselves before Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson and the pleasantly prickly Ellen DeGeneres, who not only enjoys a good performance but also likes amusing herself, Seacrest-style, by watching the contestants squirm.

From the debacle that was any performance involving Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape" to the more satisfactory treatments given to tunes like Ne-Yo's "Closer" and Alicia Keys' "No One," group day on American Idol was tough going for everyone involved.

No one—even the 71 hopefuls who made it out alive—was at his or her best, whether because they pulled an all-nighter, bickered to exhaustion or guided their wives through labor via video phone. (Congratulations, Michael Lynche!)

But amid the travesties, there were a few promises of great things to come...

"Straight Up" guy Andrew Garcia kept kickin', for one, as did Katie Stevens, Casey James, Mary Powers, Todrick Hall, Charity Vance, Ashley Rodriguez, Thaddeus Johnson, Tim Urban and Jermaine Purifory.

Same with Jermaine Sellers, although he informed us after barely surviving, "I am not meant to be in no group," and 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn, even though she was in one of the four-person "Sweet Escape" pileups.

Next Tuesday the remaining contestants will sing one more solo (in their own style, as the folks on SYTYCD would say) for a chance at making the top 24.

Ellen, start your engines.

American Idol Picks Seven to Start

If dreams could be summed up into words, they'd either spell out the lyrics to "I'm Yours" or "Man in the Mirror."

No less than eight hopefuls took a final stab at American Idol's top 24 by singing either the Jason Mraz hit or the Michael Jackson classic, resulting in—as usual—a variety of hits and misses.

Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly," Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" and Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" were also popular choices.

Did 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn doing the acoustic-guitar thing work out for her? How about Michael Lynche's funkified take on Mraz? Whose version of M.J.'s tune did the judges prefer?

"Do not throw the band under the bu-us," Kara DioGuardi said under her breath as "Mirror" singer Jermaine Sellers decided that it would be a good idea to point out the band's mistake to make up for his lackluster closing notes.

The tension built as 71 teens and twentysomethings were herded into three rooms to await their fate, this year accompanied by their very own inner monologues, as fashioned by some crafty editors.

In the almost-end, it was room 2 that got the shaft (farewell, Mary Powers, Charity Vance, Brian Walker, Christian Spear, Lloyd Thomas and Hope Johnson), leaving the 46 aspiring stars in rooms 1 and 3 with a brief feeling of accomplishment.

Which was immediately followed, of course, by another round of fingernail biting and deep breathing as the judges whittled the group down to 24.

Not only was it Ellen DeGeneres' first time seeing the alternately dashed, dazed, terrified and triumphant looks of those who had either made it further or gotten the proverbial slap in the face, but this season is the first time Idol has parsed out the final selection process into two nights.

A crafty business, this TV programming.

Speaking of crafty, the final round of selections was as full of tomfoolery as ever, with Ellen acting the part to a tee just by being herself.

"Right now you're wondering and it's just cruel," the epic staller started telling 19-year-old Katelyn Epperly. "It takes too much time to pretend one thing, for me to delay it any longer...I want to get right to it…I'm going to tell you what the answer is, right now."

Joining the bewildered Katelyn are:

• Michael Lynche, 26: The proud new papa's wife gave birth to their first child while he was rehearsing for the group round.

• Didi Benami, 23: She impressed from minute one by singing the Kara DioGuardi-penned "Terrified" and then touched hearts with a story about her recently departed best friend

• Casey James, 28: He nearly lost the use of his hands in a motorcycle accident but came roaring back to lose his shirt in his first audition.

• Aaron Kelly, 16: We so called that one.

• Lee Dewyze, 23: Simon Cowell questioned his confidence, but came around just in time to help see him through.

• Todrick Hall, 24: The Color Purple veteran and friend of Fantasia didn't even get the runaround, he was told "yes" so fast.

The remaining 17 will be revealed Wednesday.

American Idol's Top 24 Revealed

The remaining 17 candidates for American Idol season-nine glory were revealed Wednesday, with most of the slots going to those you saw coming a mile away, a couple going to people you've barely seen at all, and a few yanked from the mouths of potential greats.

For instance, what is up the annual torture of Angela Martin, the single mother of a disabled little girl whose dad passed away a few days before she auditioned for season seven? She got cut in round two of Hollywood week.

Then she left the top 50 in season eight because she had to go to court to settle a traffic violation. And her mom went missing just this past December.

This year, Angela, 28, made it to the final face-to-face with the judges, where Kara DioGuardi told her she was a star, only to send her on her devastated way yet again, in what was her last year of eligibility.

Well, such is the TV-tailored story of American Idol, which also broke the hearts of 19-year-old Thaddeus Johnson (and his mom) and 17-year-old Tori Kelly, who lost the coveted teenage ingenue spot to none other than 16-year-old Haeley Vaughn of Fort Collins, Colo.

She will be joined by:

And none of them appeared at all shy when it came time to rock out to Fefe Dobson's "Watch Me Move" for the usual montage. (However, original choice Chris Golightly was deemed "ineligible" by Fox, and Tim Urban was brought in as a replacement.)

All 24 go live next week, starting with the top 12 girls on Tuesday, followed by the guys on Wednesday. Kris Allen will perform on Thursday's results show, which will also feature clips from his trip to Haiti on behalf of the latest Idol Gives Back campaign.

American Idol' Finalists Plan Arena Tour, Compilation Album

Just couldn't get enough of A.J., EJay, RJ and, um, Jim? Don't worry, your favorite "American Idol" finalists are coming to a town near you.

The 10 finalists from the runaway hit reality talent show are hitting the road for a six-week U.S. arena tour that kicks off October 8 in San Diego.

Along with final contenders Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini (who presented Avril Lavigne the Best New Artist award at Thursday's MTV Video Music Awards), the tour will feature the recently booted Nikki McKibbin and Tamyra Gray (see "Ousted 'American Idol' Tamyra Gray Gets Another Shot") as well as RJ Helton, Christina Christian, Ryan Starr, A.J. Gil, EJay Day and Jim Verraros reprising their song selections from the show.

The winner of the contest will be announced during a two-hour telecast on Wednesday; that singer's first single is slated to hit stores September 17, according to a show spokesperson. The winner's album is scheduled to arrive November 26, preceded on October 1 by a compilation album featuring the 10 finalists.

During Tuesday's final round of performances, Clarkson and Guarini will both sing the same two original songs from the soon-to-be-released "Idol" single. Wednesday's finale will feature the 10 finalists performing medleys together, followed by the winner performing the single.

The top 30 contestants will be brought together one more time on September 23 for a two-hour television special tentatively titled "American Idol in Las Vegas," which will feature performances from all the singers as well as the winner once again performing the single.
